We walked to the septum from Side Crater the long way (i.e. anti-clockwise from Upper Hut parking area). Tobias sampled a fumarole/ice tower at S 77 deg 31 min 45.0 s; E 167 deg 9 min 9.1 s, 3758 m elevation and got some Giggenbach bottles but lost the soil probe in there. Reported very hot temperatures.

Lyra and I took CO2 flux measurements at 17 sites (attempting to make a grid). Lyra has GPS points. Fluxes ranged from 0.05 to 26+ g/cm2/hr. We sterilised shoes, ice axes etc. but no Tyvek/gloves. Would not have been practical in those conditions. Realised afterwards we did not consider wehtehr to sterilise chamber between measurements. Lyra says she felt ill as we went inside side crater and wonders if it could be due to gas – there isn’t much wind to flush it out further down. We sampled down to about ¼ or 1/3 of the way in then climbed back out and returned the way we came.
